La canción que quisiera comentar esta semana no es en absoluto tan conocida como Stairway to heaven, ni Magna Carta son tan famosos como Led Zeppelin, desde luego, pero creo que esta canción merece ocupar un espacio en esta categoría de ‘Canción de la semana’

Quisiera comentarles a todos aquellos que no la hayan oído nunca que intenten hacerse con ella y escucharla atentamente antes de seguir leyendo. Desde luego no les voy a decir que escriban ‘lord ages magna carta’ en el buscador del emule, ni que hagan doble-click cuando aparezcan los resultados de la búsqueda, ni que le den al botón derecho del ratón y seleccionen ‘descargar’ en el menú. Por supuesto que no les estoy diciendo que se la bajen de Internet, no, no, no, nada de eso, porque está prohibido, es pecado y además engorda.

La canción

Bien, supongamos que todo el mundo ha oído ya este tema. ¿Les recuerda a algún otro? Pues claro, les recuerda un poco a Stairway to heaven, ¿a que sí? Al menos por la introducción de la guitarra al principio, y por la progresión que sigue hacia algo bastante parecido al rock.

A destacar:

Tanto al principio de la canción como en algunos puntos intermedios y al final, la letra es narrada, no cantada.

Los coros femeninos. Parece ser que de Linda Taylor. A mi me encantan.

Hay gente que critica esta canción por ser demasiado ‘épica’, a lo que contribuye precisamente la narración de la historia del señor de las edades (o épocas)

El álbum



El álbum Lord of the ages fue grabado en 1.973, aunque en el 1.991 volvió a aparecer en el mercado en un doble CD junto con Martin’s café (editado originalmente en 1.977).

El grupo

Magna Carta se formó en Londres en 1.969 como grupo folk., o algo parecido, ya que sus miembros nunca han aceptado esa etiqueta. Los tres miembros fundadores fueron Chris Simpson (guitarra y voces), Lyell Tranter (guitarra y voces) y Glen Stuart (voces), aunque en el momento de grabar Lord of the ages Tranter ya había abandonado el grupo, y después de un par de cambios en la formación (posteriormente hubieron muchos más) fue Stan Gordon el que acompañó a Simpson y Stuart.

Efectivamente, con los años han ido pasando por el grupo multitud de músicos. Unos han durado más y otros menos, y desde el año 1.990 solamente componen el grupo Chris Simpson y la que desde aquel mismo año pasó a ser su esposa, Linda Taylor, que se había unido al grupo como guitarrista.

Desde entonces el dúo ha ofrecido multitud de conciertos en varios países y han sacado a la calle nuevos discos, han reeditado varios de los discos de las antiguas formaciones de Magna Carta en formato CD y DVD, y han desarrollado refritos de distintos discos anteriores remezclados con refritos de otros discos... en fin, una discografía un tanto caótica pero llena de buena música (aunque con algunos altibajos, eso sí)
